Is it really the end of the first week? In some ways it seems longer, perhaps because we have had a weekend in the way and moved locations or maybe it is the bottle of Lion stout I had with supper tonight (Alistair you will understand – 625ml of 8.8% dark beer, very nice but very strong on an empty stomach!).
The day started with breakfast on the beach (perhaps not literally – but the waves were crashing less than 10 metres from our table!) eggs, fruit juice, coffee, toast and fruit – excellent! Now that is the way to start the day only problem was I could have just sat there all day! Our van and tuk tuk arrived all too soon and it was off to Lassana Gama and the pre school to spoil the children with sweets and ascertain what needed to be done, then a tuk tuk ride to buy the paint and back (via the long short cut) to get started.
We were soon cracking on with the job and ran out of paint brushes and rollers as half the village joined in. Job done by the back of two so time for another tuk tuk ride to buy a computer for the school (which adults will also have access to –thanks Fenwick Primary for the money you raised). This will be used largely for language learning. Oh and time too to play with the children, from "A ring a ring a roses" to "Piggy in the middle". Even with all of that we were back at our guest house in time for a splash in the sea – perhaps it is more of a case of the sea splashing us! At this time of the year the waves break right up to the steps of the guest house. There really is very little dry sand!
P.S. The blog will run a day behind now we are in Hiikuduwa as I don't have the immediate internet access I enjoyed back in Colombo courtesy of our host.
