NZ Day 20 – Thursday 6th October

Complete day off today  so treated myself to a dolphin and whale watching safari.  It was a great day to be out on the water. I did get a little wet at one point as the bow of the boat hit the swell, retreated inside after that!  Gannets, sheerwaters and terns abounded, a sure sign that the fish were around as well.  And where the fish are so are the dolphins.  Came across one small pod fairly soon into the voyage they came and swam in the bow wave of the boat  for awhile .  Then another small pod before spotting the first whale “blow”.  Saw that one crest a couple of times but then went to follow a mother and calf. Caught a good sighting of both before they decided to play hard to get. These were probably all Bryde’s Whales. On the way back came across a super pod of dolphins, probably thousands.  Dolphins were cresting either side of the boat as far as the eye could see. Also swimming alongside and cruising the bow wave.  Several mothers with calves too.  It was simply amazing.  On in all a great day and another New Zealand highlight.
